Our
Story

For almost 30 years, the Broadway Heights Community Council has been the heart of our neighborhood. It has made a small San Diego community into a model of safety, involvement, and community spirit.

Founded in the late 1990s by Robert Robinson and Ralph Barnhill Sr., the Council emerged during a challenging time for Broadway Heights. Drug houses lined the hillside, crime was rising, and residents needed a unified voice to reclaim their community. Robinson and Barnhill found old maps, found the neighborhood's original name, Broadway Heights, and used it to call for change.

What started as a grassroots effort to address safety concerns has evolved into a comprehensive force for community betterment. Today, Broadway Heights is home to over 1,000 residents spanning all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life—homeowners and renters, longtime residents and new arrivals, families and retirees.

Our neighborhood sits atop the highest peaks in southeastern San Diego, bordered by Lemon Grove and Encanto, offering stunning views and a tight-knit community atmosphere that's rare in a city of our size.

Today, the Broadway Heights Community Council continues the work our founders started: building a safer community and a better quality of life for everyone who calls this neighborhood home.

We bring residents together through community cleanups, food distribution programs, neighborhood beautification projects, civic education, and advocacy before city government. We provide a forum for neighbors to discuss issues that matter—from street lighting and traffic safety to youth programs and environmental quality.

The Council serves all residents, businesses, nonprofits, schools, and community institutions without discrimination. We are noncommercial, nonsectarian, and nonpartisan—focused solely on promoting the public good and welfare of Broadway Heights.

We understand that strong communities aren't built overnight. They're nurtured through shared experiences, consistent engagement, and a genuine commitment to one another. Broadway Heights isn't just a place to live—it's a place to connect, contribute, and thrive.
